Healing Hearts for Community Development
The first step on the continuum of care for substance abuse treatment is Prevention. The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration provides funds to the local governing entities that provide behavioral health services for their communities. A certain percentage (20%) must be spent on providing prevention programs in the communities.
Since 2006, Healing Hearts for Community Development has been a provider of these programs through contracts with Metropolitan Human Services District serving Orleans, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines Parishes, and Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority serving Jefferson Parish. HHCD has also received several grants to implement other prevention programs. The prevention programs address such issues as drugs, violence, bullying, smoking/vaping, suicide
and gambling.
At the present time, HHCD facilitators are trained in and are providing the following evidence-based universal prevention programs:
- Too Good for Drugs | Grades K-12
- Generation Rx-Teens | Grades 9-12
- Generation Rx-College | Colleges and Universities
- Kids Don’t Gamble—Wanna Bet | Grades 3-8
Several HHCD facilitators are also trained in the selective prevention program, Curriculum Based Support Groups, for students who need more targeted services in a small group setting.
If you are interested in any of these prevention programs, please contact Freddie G. Landry, a Licensed Prevention Professional, at the Celebration Hope Center.
